Châteaux des Clées

Il est dur de pensé que le petit village de 186 habitants des Clées était une ville au moyen-âge, centre d’une seigneurie. Placée sur le chemin du col de Jougne et dans un resserrement de la gorge de l’Orbe elle possédait un pont  et un péage auxquelles elle devait sa prospérité.

Le Château avait certainement été construit par le comte de Genève au XIIème siècle, aujourd’hui il n’en reste plus grand-chose, que la grande tour carrée qui domine l’éperon rocheux et les restes en ruine des anciennes fortifications ainsi que la moitié d’une autre tour auparavant identique à celle qui est toujours debout, elle fût convertie en lieu d’habitation où vivent les actuelles propriétaires car oui ce château est une propriété privée donc non visitable, les propriétaires autorisent néanmoins les promenades a conditions de respecté le lieu et de ne pas cueillir les fleurs qu’ils ont planté pour embellir le site, merci pour eux !

En 1250 le Château appartenait à Pierre de Savoie, il y créa une châtellenie.

Au XIII Siècle le Château des Clées devait assurer la protection de l’abbatial de Romainmôtier et ses terres.  

Dès le XIVème siècle l’activité de la ville déclina, car le passage de Jougne devenait de moins en moins important.

Durant les guerres de Bourgognes en 1475  l’armée confédérée Suisse attaqua le Château et prirent la forteresse, son capitaine Pierre de Cossonay et son lieutenant Hugues de Gallera furent décapité et la ville brulée.

Après L’invasion Bernoise de 1536, le lieu fût remis en état pour pouvoir permettre de continuer à récolter les taxes du péage et de l’entrepôt de marchandises, mais les marchands se détournèrent des Clées pour une route plus praticable afin de passer le massif du jura notamment la route qui relie Orbe à Jougne, et le château tomba lentement en ruine.

 Ce n’est qu’en 1830 que le révérend anglais Walter Holiday racheta le château et transforma l’édifice en ruine pour en faire un lieu d’habitation d’après un croquis d’un bâtisseur anglais anonyme.

La Dame Blanche des Clées !

Une vielle légende circule autour du château des Clées, cette légende nous viens du moyen-âge où le châtelain des Clées avait laissé sa femme enceinte sans le savoir pour partir à la guerre, sont absence fût longue elle dura des mois et à son retour le petit garçon était nés, il fut alors persuadé qu’elle l’avait trompé durant son exil,  fous de rage le chevalier jeta le bébé dans l’Orbe, rivière qui coule en contrebas du château, sa dame en bonne mère protectrice ce jeta à l’eau pour tenter de le sauvé et perdit la vie elle aussi. Depuis lors durant les nuits lugubres aux alentours de minuit sa silhouette évanescente se manifeste sur les berges toujours à la recherche de son enfant, il y a encore quelque année en arrière une habitante du village avait juré l’avoir aperçue.

Bon pas la peine mes chers chasseurs et chasseuses de fantôme d’aller embêter les propriétaires du château la nuit avec vos appareils pour cela car je vous le rappelle ces manifestations se passe surtout sur les berges de l’orbe aux alentours du village.

Castle of "les Clées"

It is hard to imagine that the small village of Les Clées with only 186 inhabitants of was a medieval town, the center of a seigneury. Placed on the road to the pass of Jougne and in a tightening of Orbe's fauces. It possessed a bridge and a toll to which made its prosperity.

The Castle had certainly been built by the Count of Geneva in the 12th century. But today there is nothing more left than the large square tower which dominates the rocky spur and the ruins of the ancients fortifications as well as half of another tower previously identical to the one who is still standing. It was converted into a place of residence where the current owners live. Because, yes, this castle is a private property therefore unvisitable. The owners nevertheless allow the walks on conditions that you respect the place and do not pick the flowers that they planted to embellish the site. Thank to them.

In 1250 the Castle belonged to Pierre de Savoie, where he created a castellany.

In the XIIIth century the Castle of Les Clées was to ensure the

protection of the abbey of Romainmôtier and its lands.  

In the early14th century, the activity of the town declined, as the passage of Jougne became less and less important.

During the wars of Bourgognes in 1475 the Swiss Confederate army attacked the castle and conquer the fortress. Its captain, Pierre de Cossonay, and his lieutenant, Hugh de Gallera, were beheaded and the city burned.

After the Bernes' invasion in 1536, the place was rebuild so as to be able to continue collecting the toll and warehouse taxes. But the merchants divert from Les Clées for a more practicable route to pass the massif of the Jura, in particular the road connecting Orbe with Jougne, and the castle slowly fell to ruin.It was not until 1830 that the English Reverend Walter Holiday bought the castle and transformed the building to make it a residential place, from a sketch by an anonymous English builder.

The White Lady of Les Clées!

An old legend circulate around the castle of Clées. This legend comes from the middle ages when the lord of Les Clées had left his wife pregnant, without knowing it, to go to the war. In is long absence that lasted months upon its return, the little boy was born. He then was persuaded that she had cheated on him during his exile. Mad from his rage , the knight threw the baby into the Orbe, a river flowing down the castle. His mother threw herself into the water to try to save him and end up losing her life too. Since then during the gloomy nights around midnight her evanescent figure appears on the banks always searching for her child. A few years ago a resident of the village had sworn he had seen her.

Well not worth, my dear ghost hunters, to go bother the owners of the castle at night with your devices for that, I remind you these demonstrations happens especially on the banks of the orb around the village.
